Minutes of Annual Membership Meeting

October 2, 2008

Call to Order: President Joe O’Hara called the meeting to order at 6:42 p.m. at the ranch room behind the USFS Lower Trinity Ranger Station, following a 6:00 p.m. potluck supper for members and guests.

Attendance: Quorum is 7 members (1/3 of 19 members). A quorum is present.

Members Present: Joe & Pat O’Hara, Paul & Susan Abbott, John Amos & Joy Brunner, Don & Barbara Darst, Dillon Lewis, Laurel Reimann, Guy Conversano

Members Absent: Rebecca Cape, William Goodman, Robert Hartman, John Johnston, Rick & Julie Stewart, Katherine Worn, George Wright

Guest Present: Jamie MacKenzie, Director of Willow Creek Head Start

Speaker: Dillon Lewis, Fuels Specialist for the Lower Trinity Ranger District, gave an update on projects to reduce fuels on Forest Service land in the Lower Trinity area. The Trinity River Project follows the Trinity River from Grey Flat to Horse Linto Creek. It includes Patterson Road but not Brannan Mountain. An archeological assessment of the area must be completed before fuels reduction work can begin. The Waterman Ridge Project is in the planning stage. Implementation for both these projects is tentatively set for 2010 or 2011. The Mill Creek Hazard Reduction Project east of the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation was implemented in August 2008 and will last for several years. The Fire Safe Council is welcome to suggest target areas to prioritize for future fuels reduction projects. Restoration funds could possibly be used to clear brush near Forest Service roads.

Minutes: Minutes of the August 7, 2008 meeting were distributed to members prior to this meeting. Barbara Darst moved to approved the minutes as distributed. Motion seconded and carried.

President’s Report: Joe O’Hara reported the following:

1) The Humboldt County Fire Safe Council will meet October 6 at the Bureau of Land Management Arcata Field Office.

2) Tentative date for chipper day on Patterson Road is Oct 22, pending confirmation by Davey Tree Surgery.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Paul Abbott reported the income and expenditures for September and the current balance of the corporation’s savings and checking accounts. Barbara Darst moved to accept the report as presented. Motion seconded and carried.

New Business:

Number of directors - Upon motion duly made (Barbara Darst) and seconded (Pat O’Hara) and by vote of the members, it was RESOLVED that the number of directors be set at seven (7).

Election of Board Members - Nominating Committee Chairman Guy Conversano read the names of the seven nominees for director. There was no response to the invitation to make nominations from the floor. Guy Conversano and Dillon Lewis were appointed as tellers. They distributed written ballots to members and tallied the vote. The tellers’ report is attached to the minutes.

Each of the seven nominees received a majority of the votes cast and is therefore elected.

Board members are: Paul Abbott, Susan Abbott, John Amos, Barbara Darst, John Johnston, Joe O’Hara, Laurel Reimann.

Certificate of Special Recognition - Barbara Darst displayed a certificate of special recognition for Rebecca Cape for her years of dedication to the Willow Creek Fire Safe Council. Since Rebecca is not in attendance at this meeting, members will present her with the certificate at work on Monday.

Word of Thanks - Jamie MacKenzie, Director of Willow Creek Head Start, thanked the Willow Creek Fire Safe Council for reducing fuels adjacent to the preschool, making it safer for the children. She displayed instructional materials she uses to teach ecology to the preschoolers.
